Richard Lee Claar was born on November 19, 1926 in Columbus, Ohio to Lawrence and Millie Claar. He grew up in Columbus and graduated high school before serving in the United States Army during World War II and the years to follow before the Korean Conflict.
Richard served as pastor of Branson Bible Church from 1959 to 1986. He was a graduate of Dallas Bible College and a part of Back to the Bible Ministries until he retired. He served on the Board of Director for Mid-America Missions and was a long time member of the Independent Fundamental Churches of America. A gifted artist, he often highlighted his sermons with chalk drawings in order to convey God’s message more clearly. Upon retirement, he continued to serve as chaplain with the VFW and with Skaggs Hospital Mended Hearts program ministering to the ill for many years. He had great devotion and love for God that he lived out as a servant of Christ.
Richard married Kathleen “Kay” Foley on October 20, 1943 in Greenup, Kentucky. They celebrated 76 years of marriage and togetherness. Richard’s love for Kay was unconditional.
Rev. Claar will also be remembered for his love to paint, carve and for his undying support of his Ohio State Buckeyes! He was a patriot through and through, loved America and was a Civil War and WWII historian. He proudly wore his WW2 Veteran hat wherever he went right up until the end of his life and thanked every veteran he came in contact with for their service to our great nation. Mostly, he will be remembered for his commitment and love for his family and all he shepherded throughout his life. His compassion for others was unmatched, especially for the lost. He lighted our path to join him in eternal life with God, our Father in heaven and no greater gift could ever have been given to us.
Richard entered into rest and moved home on Friday, January 24, 2020 at his home in Branson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Roy, Jim, Lawrence and Lloyd and sister Hilma.
