Meredith Jeanne Mizell

June 12, 1956 ~ May 14, 2021 (age 64)

Meredith Mizell’s outstanding operatic soprano joined her family of musicians in the heavenly choir on May 14, 2021.  Known for a voice that could melt your heart, an infectious smile, and a positive word that could both encourage and make you laugh, Meredith's sweet soul will be missed.

Meredith was born June 12, 1956 in San Antonio, Texas to John E. and Shirley E. Hodges Mizell.  The family moved to Branson, Missouri when Meredith was five.  She attended Branson schools, graduating from high school in 1974.  Meredith’s magnificent talent was developed early with her mother as her first music teacher and her father as first voice teacher.  She went on to the School of the Ozarks where her father, Dr. Mizell, was Professor of Music for over forty years.  She received her Bachelor of Music in 1978 and completed her graduate degree in Music with a concentration in opera at Oklahoma City University in 1983.

Meredith began her operatic career after the National Semi-Finals of the Metropolitan National auditions.  Her sensational San Francisco opera debut as Elsa in Lohengrin launched a remarkable career that took her to many renowned national and international opera companies as lead soloist.   After Meredith retired to her home in Branson, she continued to share her musical gifts and spent several years directing music for the First Presbyterian Church of Branson.

Meredith loved Israel and relished traveling through the Holy Land.  She sang her way through 17 pilgrimages alongside her good friend, Sherry Herschend, giving her countless opportunities to share her strong faith and love of Jesus Christ to anyone within earshot.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John E. Mizell and Shirley E. Hodges Mizell, a sister, Marcia Mizell Abernathy.  She leaves many friends and family, including an aunt, Patricia Mizell Roberts, and several cousins who mourn her passing.  Burial will be alongside her parents and sister at Ozarks Memorial Park Cemetery in Branson.  A Celebration of Life service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Branson on June 12, 2021 at 1:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to Christian Action Ministry- 610 S 6th St STE 102, Branson, MO 65616; First Presbyterian Church of Branson - 420 W Main St, Branson, MO 65616; Branson Regional Arts Council - 205 S Commercial St, Branson, MO 65616; or the Taneyhills Library - 200 S. 4th St, Branson, MO 65616.
